Encaustic painting is a 2000 year old painting medium used by the Fayum Egyptians 2000 years ago for thier realistic mummy cask paintings. These paintings were painted during a persons lifetime and generally hung in thier house until death at which time they were mounted to thier caskets. Thier colors today appear as if they were just painted. Thom uses this technique in his encaustic portraits today.
